Eclectic Dawn — Album

Story

The album Eclectic Dawn brings together my music of the 'early' years into one arc starting and ending with reflections on the Thames, with journeys to other places and events.

Etude-1

The first piece that I have ever written was inspired by the river that sometimes just flows, that is sometimes positively angry with waves splashing with no rhythm against the embankment, sometimes calm and sometimes full of sparkle with fireworks.

Helsinki

Inspired by a visit to this beautiful Nordic city that can be quite cold and by a trip to Suomenlinna (video), the sea fortress there.

Journey to Grandfather

Remembers the first trip with my daughter to see her grandfather. It was exhilarating and tedious, but then it was an amazing meeting between a little girl and her grandfather so much waiting for her. It was a tender and also bittersweet meeting, as it was to be their last.

P1A

Inspired by my daughter playing with periods of exploration, building towers and ‘reading’ books, as well as periods of running around and fearlessly tackling the physical objects in her way.

Helsinki Origins

The track Helsinki was finished in summer, although it is about a cold winter day, and going back to the original idea, I had to realise that quite a bit of summery feelings crept into it! This track goes back to the origins, finished in the wintry months in Scotland, and brings out the cooler tones and quite a different character, so does the film Cool City!

Gareloch Salsa

The first track written in Scotland, it tries to capture the sparkling sunshine on the deep dark waters, seabirds soaring, hills rolling around our new home. It is also a fitting music for sights and sounds of sailing in Scotland (video).

Night Improv

Actually the second track that I have written, but finished much earlier than Etude-1, it is a musical reflection of late evenings on the Thames and so completes the arc of the album. Every two weeks it’s low tide on the tidal Thames later in the evening and the river becomes really calm and quiet, the lights of the other shore reflecting on the small waves. A great time to be out and about, perhaps with friends at the pub on the embankment.
